Master 2 in Microbiology

Courses :

  • Microbial Bioprocesses
  • Microbiology for Health and the Environment
  • Industrial Microbiology and Fermentation (work-study programme)

Industrial microbiology and fermentation

Goals :

The objective of this Master's programme is to train managers in fundamental research and industrial research and development who will have an integrated vision not only of the biology of microorganisms, from the molecular to the ecosystem level, but also of the industrial applications that result from it, in a variety of fields (innovation in agri-food - quality, bioremediation, health, bioenergy, diagnostic tools, industrial microbiology). The first year of the Master's programme is common to all students.

The second year is organised into three different pathways :

  • Course 1 : Microbial Bioprocesses
  • Course 2 : Microbiology for Health and the Environment
  • Course 3 : Industrial Microbiology and Fermentation (work-study programme)

Career opportunities :

The Master's degree in Microbiology allows students to either enter the professional world directly after completing their Master's 2 or continue their studies at a doctoral level. Career opportunities include management/engineering positions in R&D, industry (health, agri-food), quality management, sustainable development, hygiene/environment/safety. Further studies in the form of a PhD within UCA laboratories, national and international laboratories, or in collaboration with companies (CIFRE), provide access to careers as researchers and research professors in various fields of microbiology.

The advantages of the Industrial Microbiology and Fermentation (MIF) programme :

  • Strong research and private sector support in areas covering all aspects of microbiology (bioprocesses, agri-food, environment and health), facilitating professional integration.
  • Special links between academic laboratories and businesses: networks of the Centre of Excellence in Microbiology, Industry and Innovation (PEM2i) and the Great Challenge : Ferments of the Future (GDFF).
  • Training supported as part of the France 2030 “Skills and Jobs of the Future” project “FAMOUS”: national recognition and visibility of the program.
  • Dual perspective on the job market and/or further studies.

Enrolling in the Master 2 programme

Starting in 2027, students enrolled in the MIF programme will be welcomed to a new building specifically designed for teaching industrial microbiology and fermentation. They will have access to cutting-edge equipment for studying and producing microorganisms.
